Music videos

A music video is a performance on film or videotape of a musical recording accompanied by synchronised actions, such as dramatic interpretation of the lyrics or series of, sometimes surreal, images. 

What we see on screen very often matches the lyrics because we either see the artist singing the lyrics plus the images on screen relate to the lyrics also.

Riptide- the images on screen match the lyrics and the images were surreal. 

Roy Shuker- music videos are promotional devices

Music videos were invented to advertise singles 

Some tv music channels are MTV, Kerrang and 4music. 

By 2011, YouTube Had become the main way in which music is consumed 

Music videos now promote the artist, single, tours and films

Star persona’ is the media representation of a celebrity. It established their brand and helps sell the future music.

What are music videos for

To help promote an artist and show their image. Promote tours, albums, films and encourage chart sales e.g. Sam smith sang in the new James Bond film. Star persona is the media representation of an artist e.g. lady gaga is eccentric. They establish performance skills e.g. dancing, musical instrument. Sven E carlsson (1999) There are 3 types of music videos and they are performance clips (were the artist is dancing in the video), a conceptual music video (a narrative video or a video with a story) and hybrid video (which has a story in it but also a performance). Performance types are singing, dancing, instrumental and concert. LO1- Trailer/ Music video analysis

The first clip I will be analysing is the trailer for FIFA 21 produced by EA Sports. The purpose of this trailer is to try entice the audience into purchasing the game which fully released on the 9th of October around the world. The audience for this product is people who are interested in football as it is a football game but also predominantly at younger males as they stereotypically are more likely to game and play football.  The trailer begins with the cover star Kylian Mbappe in a zoom call with fellow PSG teammates to showcase to the audience that this a cooperative video game where you can play with friends. This will interest the audience as gaming is meant to be enjoyable with friends or by yourself. Throughout the trailer, short clips of gameplay are used to give the audience a taste of what the game they are about to purchase looks like.
